Tornado Resistant Doors & Frames

Part 1 - General

  1 . 1 Work included
Supply only of;
    . 1 Single door/frame units as large as 4'0" x 8'0" as well as paired door/frame units as large as 8'0" x 8'0". In all instances, the doors and frames shall be supplied with hinges, gasketing and latches which shall form an integral part of the tested unit.
  1 . 2 Supply only of the door, door frame and hardware unit;
    . 1 Tornado Resistant Steel Frames.
    . 2 Tornado Resistant Steel Doors.
    . 3 Hinges & Latching Device (preinstalled) for Swinging Doors.
  1 . 3 Related Work
    . 1 Building frames into walls.

    . 2 Installation of door and frame units into the building structure.

    . 3 Caulking of joints between frames and other building components.

    . 4 Finish painting.

    . 5 Fasteners for frame product in previously placed concrete, masonry or structural steel.

    . 6 Supply and installation of door hardware not provided by the manufacturer of the door/frame unit.

  1 . 4 Requirements of Regulatory Agencies
    . 1 Install fire labelled steel door and frame products in accordance with NFPA-80, current edition, except where otherwise specified.
    . 2 Doors and frames to be tested in accordance with FEMA #361 "Design and Construction Guidance for Community Shelters" most current edition. As part of the submittal process the manufacturer of the door/frame units shall submit independent test data from a recognized, licensed laboratory indicating compliance with the standards of this test as specified by the project architect or engineer.

  1 . 5 Warranty
    . 1 Material and workmanship shall be warranted by the manufacturer for a period of five (5) years from the date of supply. Warranty shall apply to replacement or retrofit of product only.

Part 2 - Products

  2 . 1 Materials
    . 1 Steel:
A : Commercial grade, zinc coated steel to ASTM A653.
B : Structural Steel Channel to conform with ASTM A36.
C : Structural Steel Plate to conform with ASTM A569.
    . 2 Door Core Materials -Tornado Resistant core shall be manufacturer's proprietary standard.
    . 3 Primers: Rust inhibitive touch-up only
  2 . 2 Fabrication
Door and Frame Products
    . 1 General:
A : Frames and doors shall be manufacturer's proprietary standard, tested as part of a fully operable assembly, including door, frame, gasketing and locking hardware in accordance with FEMA #361 "Design and Construction Guidance for Community Shelters", most current edition, as specified by the project architect or engineer.
B : Frames and doors shall be blanked, reinforced, drilled and tapped for mortised, templated hardware.
C : Frames and doors shall be reinforced, where required, for surface mounted hardware. Drilling and tapping shall be by others.
D : Provide factory-applied, touchup primer at areas where zinc coating has been removed during fabrication.
  2 . 3 Fabrication - Frames, Welded Type
    . 1 Frame product shall be accurately mitered and securely welded on the inside of the profile.
    . 2 Welded joints shall be ground to a smooth, uniform finish.
    . 3 Floor anchors shall be securely attached to the inside of each jamb profile.
    . 4 Weld in two (2) temporary jamb spreaders per frame to maintain proper alignment during shipment.
    . 5 Provide for appropriate anchorage to floor and wall construction. Quantities, types and locations of wall anchorage shall be as per manufacturer's proprietary design.
  2 . 4 Fabrication - Doors
    . 1 Doors shall be swing type and shall be flush, with provision for tornado resistant glass as indicated on schedules.
    . 2 Longitudinal edges shall be (butt seamed) (seamless).
    . 3 Top and bottom of doors shall be provided with inverted, recessed channels spot welded to door faces. Structural steel channels shall be welded flush to the top and bottom of the door.
  2 . 5 Pre-Installation of Swinging Door Hardware
    . 1 Hinges & latching device to be supplied complete with door and frame in conformance with tornado resistant requirements of project.
    . 2 Hinges and latching device shall be factory pre-installed on the frame/door unit.


Part 3 - Execution

  3 . 1 Site Storage and Protection of Materials
    . 1 All materials shall be thoroughly inspected upon receipt and all discrepancies, deficiencies and/or damages shall be immediately reported in writing to the supplier.
  3 . 2 Installation
    . 1 Set frames plumb, square, level and at correct elevation.
    . 2 Make allowance for deflection to ensure structural loads are not transmitted to frame product.
    . 3 Install doors and hardware in accordance with hardware templates and manufacturer's instructions.
    . 4 Adjust factory pre-installed hardware as well as all other operable parts for correct clearance and functions.
